I have a 98 Ford Taurus. I just bought it a week ago and i noticed a couple days ago that it was having a bit of trouble shifting into 1st gear. After it gets past 1st it seems to be fine. This morning the "Service Engine Soon" Light came on. My brother in law ran diagnostic on it and says one code showed up for the torque converter. He knows nothing about transmissions so he could give me no advice.

The problem is I just spent $2000 on this car so I have no money. Last Sept my vans transmission went and I ended up paying out $1100 to Aamco just to have them tell me that there was noting they coudl do and I needed a new transmission (which I didn't have the money for... so I ended up junking it).

So I want to know if anyone has any idea about how much it will cost to have the torque converter fixed or if it can even be fixed... I am going to have to get a new transmission?
OK sorry about that. It has 144000 miles. When I put the car form Park to drive it will go but as it start going it get to about 20mph then it jerks into the next gear (i don't know much about transmissions... i assumed that it was 1st gear.. but now that I think about it that woudl be 2nd wouldn't it? I have no idea). If I accelerate very slowly it won't jerk into gear BUT it feels like it can' move into gear... and the only way to explain it is that it feels like it is lagging....then it gets over 25 mph and is fine.
