98 Ford Taurus - Code P1311?

We have a 98 Ford Taurus 3.0L 6 cyl - we've had an issue with the following code popping up off and on - P1311 - The first time the Check Engine light came on, we took it to Auto Zone to test and they came up with the P1311 code, which said something about the Fuel-Air Mixture.

We then took the car to a mechanic who said it was most likely the Mass Airflow Sensor. So, I went out and got one and replaced it. For a long time, the code went away, but now the Check Engine light intermittently comes back on, and always with the same P1311 code. Sometimes it will come on and stay on for days or even a few weeks, and sometimes it'll go away within an hour.

So tonight I looked online for the actual Ford code list. On their list, the P1311 code comes up as "ionization misfire detection module communication fault."

This doesn't sound anything like what Auto Zone or the mechanic said. So my question is basically this: What the devil does "ionization misfire detection module communication fault" mean and what could be causing this?
