98 Dodge Neon does not start?

Last night when I try to start my dodge neon 98 after half an hour in the mall parking. It did not start. All lights on the light pannel was OFF but funny thing is fuel and temprature gauge needles was going up and click click sound was coming from the dash board when I was putting the key into the ignition switch. I gently hit the starter and battery terminal (Hot one) and it started. One gentel man helped me out from the same situation last month at the mall by doing so but that time lights was ON and guage needle was ok. Can anyone tell me if it is the battery problem or the starter. Thanks
 
try cleaning the battery cables real good and see if it starts then ,if not you may have to replace the starter on it,when they start to go bad you can tap on them and they will work for a while,its more than likely the starter going bad,but check the cables real good for any looseness or corrossion and clean them real good,good luck.
