97 Mazda 626 Shift Linkage Problem?

I recently bought a 97 Mazda 626. I noticed for a while that the second gear would skip sometimes then all the sudden the car just stopped driving period. It would only work in reverse, otherwise it pretty much just reved the engine. I was told is mostly likely a shift linkage problem where I just have to go under there and tighten it. Any opinions? How would I do this and what would it cost?
