97 ford explorer 4x4 loud noises when turning in 4x4?

i have a ford explorer 4x4 that when turnin kinda slow and turning hard there is a very loud noise coming from the front end when engaged in 4x4 high. when in auto mode it doesnt really happen. any thoughts on what it is?
