97 ford escort just wont start,the engine turns over but it wont take,what can

be wrong ,how do i test it? my car cut out at a light and just wont start ,my check engine light is not on ,but when i turn the engine it just wont start what could it be and how do i check for it,the car has been running fine until this mishap
