97 dodge ram 2WD V8 5.9 Club cab . Is my overdrive faulty?

I read it was better to use overdrive all the time so I push the button and the overdrive button lights up and stays on for a little while then I notice that it goes off by itself and I have to keep turning it on everytime I start the truck. Is this normal? I use it to drive around town and rarely if ever get on a highway and rarely exceed 60mph. Any insight would be great. Thanks
