Background:
The car had a blown head gasket shortly after I bought(or probably before it)as well as a second coolant leak. Before I got the second one fixed, as I wasn't paying as much attention to the temp gauge, my car actually got hot to the point the light came on. I let off the gas and coasted and was about to pull over when the light went off and my temp came down. I told them that when I took my car in as I was afraid of cracking my engine block. I didn't hear anything about it, so I assume it's all good. It's been to several other mechanics since then. The next problem was the car would run extremely rough, rich, and then stall out if I didn't wait an hour before restarting it. After a million trips to different mechanics and no one having a clue, one mechanic replaced a spark plug wire and the fuel pump. Problem solved.

Other issues that may or most likely, may not have any bearing...Shifts hard into second gear, but letting off gas at right time diminishes that. The buttons in my radio are all jumbled up. They do not match what they did originally and are supposed to match. I don't know if that implies an electrical issue or what.

Detail:

About a week or so after my fuel pump was replaced, I felt a kick while at a light. Not having money or any desire to revisit the mechanic, I ignored it. It has continually progressed. Now at any light, the RPMS jump all around usually between 500-700 RPMS. They can dip lower. The car constantly feels like it's going to stall and on several instances, has come very close to it, but has yet to do so. This problem seems to be agitated by having any sort of electronics on...Heater, lights, defroster, radio. The more on, the worse it acts. But it still acts up to a lesser extent even if none are on. If I give it a little gas at a light and get it up 1000 RPMs, most of the fluctuations disappear, and are almost undetectable unlike the 100-300 fluctuations that normally occur. I have VERY rarely felt it occur at higher speeds. It has no problem when accelerating. This only seems to happen when idling, de-accelerating, and remaining at a constant speed. What would cause this? My guess would be fuel related

I think they replaced the fuel filter when they did the fuel pump, but not sure. I have also added fuel injector cleaner since then. I have also tried visiting a different gas station.

Also I read about people with similar problems having their cars relearn how to idle. However, since it seems different with each vehicle, I could not find how to reteach my car. Would this help?
