93 Honda Civic (DX) experience ?

Can anyone please tell me if it's normal for a 93 honda civic (dx) with 99k miles to have really terrible pickup before 25 MPH ? .. It seems like it goes so slow, unless you press pedal all the way down, and then it revs but does it. (But that's not supposed to be required, right?) Ive heard this model has low horsepower, could that be why ? Lastly, should I consider swapping a new trans in ? How much would labor cost ?
 
My friend has a 94' Honda civic sedan and it does not have that lag in acceleration..

these are slow cars, but I"ve driven slow cars in the past and can say that I've never had bogged down acceleration.
 
It is not normal for the DX to have terrible pickup. It sounds like the clutch needs replacing, not the complete transmission. No idea how much it would cost, but not terribly expensive. Labor in my area is around $80.00 per hour. Shop around for prices, see if you can get a written estimate free. Good luck with it.
