I am looking into some cars and I got a offer for a 92 Mazda Protege with a rebuilt engine only 85000 miles but the manual window wont roll down and the bumper needs to be replaced for $1700($700 down and $50 a week)and also a 1999 Ford Contour for $1000 ( I must admit this one looks better) a new engine (about 25k miles on it) Car has 147k total miles. But this guy doesn't have the Maintenance report on the car. WHAT SHOULD I DO? I am a single parent of 2 and need a car bad and it will be my FIRST car I want to make the right choice as far as reliability is concerned.

Mazda Protege's are very very reliable, but you could get one in good condition for $1700. Not one that needs a new bumper.

I have a 96 Mazda Protege for $1900. Only thing it needed was a new radio and side mirror. About $150 to fix that probem. It has 140,000 miles orginal engine, never rebuilt. I drive it hard everyday and so far, I have no problems. I had it for 4 years now.

My friends had older Protege's like the 92 model with around 250,000 miles and they never had any problems. Original, non-rebuilt engines.

Stay away from the Contours.
I owned 2. A 98 contour svt, put a new engine in it twice... yes twice. The engine sucks in those things. I replaced the tranny, the clutch, the water pump, lots more than that. I finally gave up on it.
The other contour I sold for 250 cash just to get it away.

Id go with the protege. Definitely.
