I have a 1991 Nissan Sentra. It is sputtering badly, and I am not sure why. This happened to me before, and I fixed it by taking the gas cap off. I bought a new gas cap but it did the same thing. I left it off for a couple months and decided to try to put the new one back on. When I did it was fine for another few months until today. Not sure what the deal is, why it was fine for awhile then started back up. Mechanics I would appreciate any advice or ideas.

Not 100% on this but it sounds as if your vent tube is stopped up!
Gas tanks have a vent tube along with the main filling tube to allow for air transfer. If it is not functioning you have a vacuum.
Also be sure you purchased a quality replacement cap that was designed for your specific car.
