90 mazda miata...it won't hold and idle so I've had the A/C button on (it's empty) am?

I causing damage to the unit?......my mechanic wants to start with a throttle plate cleaning........I'm afraid it might be an IAC valve. Tight on money right now. I'd rather just keep the rpm's up with the a/c on. It has 58,000 orig. miles
