89 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.2L 4wd problems. What could be wrong?

The 4wd on my Jeep wrangler won't work. The shifter will shift into the positions for 4wd but the Jeep won't actually go into it. What are some possibilities of what it could be? And how can it be fixed?
