88 Chevy k2500 4x4 doesnt engage. whats the problem and how can i fix it?

the shifter is on the floor and when i put it in 4hi or 4low the light doesnt even come on or engage the 4wd. i heard that the vacuum hose was ripped off the transfer case by a snowbank from the guy i bought it from. but i also heard that 88 is when they started making the 4wd different. i need help lol
