8703e reception problems

I am a new smartphone user and was recently given an old BB 8703e to try it out before purchasing a new phone. My carrier is Bell Mobility, although I have not used it yet for email, just for telephone calls and texting. The OS is V4.1.0.385 (Platform 2.2.0.184)

I started to have problems with the phone after a few weeks. At times the home screen would dim, turn a green color with horizontal lines (like a television screen) and eventually go blank. I did not receive calls or text messages during this period, although they came in hours or days later. It would stay this way for periods of time and then correct itself eventually. This was provoked often when I tried to use the phone in direct sunlight, but also inside, at home. I tried charging battery, although not always low, and sometimes it helped. Another BB user suggested that perhaps I needed to download updates - would this make a difference? If so, where do I find them.

I tried to take the phone into my carrier for repair, but the minimum cost for a diagnosis is not that much less than upgrading to a new phone. Does it sound like the phone is in need of repair, or have other users had this problem and if so, how did they resolve it.

Sounds to me like water damage. When you take out the battery there should be a white water damage indicator. Is it still white or has it turned red? You see when you use your BlackBerry in direct sunlight the moisture inside of the device could start reacting, thus triggering your problem. It could also be a damaged LCD, although if there is no physical damage to be seen it is rare for the LCD to act up like that, unless the connection is loose or there is water damage.
