My 86 Oldsmobile has had a weird idle for long time then it started to stall out when I came to red lights. It seems like it keeps cycling between air mixture rates until it hits one too lean or rich and stalls out. I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter with no effect. So I decided to take it into a garage to diagnose it. They said the computer said it was a MAF detector problem. I didn't want to pay $150 ($200 subtracting what I paid for part) just in labor for something I could change my self. I replaced the MAF detector even tried unpluging the battery for a couple days to see if would reset the computer. Nothing I have done has had any effect. Should I take it to a shop and tell them to give it a "tune up"? Or is there another part replacement or adjustment I should make. I though of buying a odb1 adapter if it can fix my problem, I just hate paying exorbitant fees for eveytime they hook a car to a computer, especially when I would love to do the car computer stuff my self.
It uses Fuel injection

If you have a carbureted E2ME carburetor and it needs to be rebuilt with a new float, the car will stall at start up ,at stop signs, when turning, etc. My dad had a Buick Skylark,2.8 engine and that is what curred the problem. We replaced all vacuum lines, charcoal canister, new battery to no avail. You should check each vacuum line under the hood for vacuum leaks first though and repair. The Map sensor has a plastic vacuum line that may be cracked and it links to a carburetor vacuum port ,check that for cracks vacuum leak.
