Hello every one,
i think i have a popular problem, but i couldn't find an answer to it yet, so when everything else fails, i turn to this forum...
my problem is the notorious HotSync Error: Connection is lost (6410)... when i'm syncing large .pdb files (medical dictionary, 13 MB) using palm QuickInstall utility, i get the 6410 error... even that i'm sure i have enough memory and i configured the local port speed to 9600 (lowest)...

so, what can i do, let's hear it guys, thanx
 
Rather than attempting to summarize what I found, I recommend you Google the words "hotsync" and "6410". There are a large number of articles written with advice on how to troubleshoot such an error.
 
I already did this troubleshooting before i post this thread, and it didnt work out. i found Graffiti_Shortcuts.prc and removed it, but it didnt fix it...

this problem is crippling my...any more ideas, thanx
 
2 things to consider:

1. Speed up the connection from the 9600 recommended by that 2001 Palm response to a set speed of 57,600 or the 152K and see if a "set" speed will allow the transfer.

2. Make the transfer via an SD card reader/writer attached to the PC and then if necessary transfer it to RAM - 13MB may just be too much to handle through HotSync although I did transfer 900MB via hot sync to a Garmin Que to the SD card a couple of years ago but it took well over 1.4 hours.

The other drastic option: delete all of the USB devices on your pc via the Device Manager and then reboot and re-establish them and see if that might clear out some cobwebs - but that's a royal pain if you've never done it.

- i tried the first one (57.600) and it didnt work either...
- I also tried the second solution (which raise another question: can I just simply transfer .prc and .pdb files to external memory and make'em work, dont i have to "install" them using palm Install Utility)... any way i transfered them to external memory and when i launched them the palm froze and I had to soft reset it... and when i tried to move them to the RAM, the funniest thing happened, they disappeared, they are taking space (i noticed that RAM space decreased the same exact amount as the files size), but i cant find them, they are just not there, i'm tried to find them with Zlauncher, no luck there...what's happening??!!
p.s: the files are 3 .pdb (the 13 MB and 2 small files) and one .prc, and i put them in the same folder..
 
Demotallica - nope you don't have to install them via the Quick Install as long as they are truly a prc or pdb file. By attempting to open them on the SD card that might be causing some of the issues.

Here's what I'd suggest - load the actual program file via the Quick Install and then transfer the large 13MB pdb file to the SD card and then move it to ram. It may be that the reader program will allow you to move it back to the SD card after it has once recognized it.

To get started - soft reset the device and that should clear the glitch that Zlauncher can't see the files. Delete them all and then hot sync to clear the cache and then hot sync again as outlined above to load the program and then load the 13mb and move it to RAM before launching anything related to that reader program.

If the PRC is some sort of nutshell installer that unpacks or unzips once installed (as some do because they actually have more than one file) then this should fix the issues you are having.
 
hi.
i did what u told me, it all went well until i tried to move the 13 MB from the external memory to the RAM, and the palm froze, again.
so, i tried to think outside the box... the files I was wrestling with are SkyScape powered medical dictionary, so i tried something else, i HotSynced a 18 MB isilo e-book, and it worked just fine, and i concluded that large file sizes was not the issue here...
i thought that the problem is in the scyscape smart files, but i synced a number of skyscape powered books successfully (up to 5 MB).
maybe the file itself is coorupted, but another 9MB has the same exact problem (the size relation is just too strong to ignore), besides, the guy who gave to me told they are fine, the last thing to do is to try them on another device, and see what happens..

i'm terribly sorry for yapping this much, and i'm really grateful for ur time...

any recommendations? i'll try them on another device and let u know...
