60 litre tropical tank: what and how many fish please?

Just got a 60 (British) litre tank and filter, heater, cover etc and want to get some tropical fish for it. It's about 2 foot 4 inches long by one foot 4 inches wide.
Now, I believe I have to set it up and wait for two weeks which is no problem, but how many fish could I put in it so they have plenty of room and aren't suffering or over crowded? Also some recomendations for some colourful fish would be nice. I'd like to have two of each type if that is possible? Thanks in advance.

you could have

6 guppies
and
3 corydoras
and
3 platies to make a nice community
 
why be like everybody else by having lots of tropical /colorful fishes,do something really original with a tank that size,it be really kool to have say a piranha in it instead
