5th gear has gone out on my transmission. This is a used trans. from junkyard. I replaced transmission a couple years ago. Old Trans. had no fifth gear or third. and If I remember right others were going... After driving with the replacement transmission for a few months, the fifth gear just stopped working. I was going down highway, then it just stopped, as if I had suddenly slammed the clutch down while going down the highway. I opened up the 'access panel' on the end of the trans by passenger wheel and discovered that the big nut on the main shaft was loose. I tightened this bolt back up and then drove it again, 5th gear regained. However, within about 1:45 minutes on highway, it popped again, 5th was out. Both times this happened the shifter remained in 5th gear position.
My questions are: 1. what has caused this? 2. If I re-tighten the nut on the main shaft in the trans. and use a thread locker this time, will I then have 5th gear returned with no worries about it going out again? Is this ok to do or will I cause a bigger problem?
