5900 Remote - keys must be pressed hard to work

i have a 5900 receiver and just bought a remote of ebay, was used and so i took my chances. it works, however, when i try to use any of the buttons i must press them very hard for the remote to do anything. the guy i bought it from said he would take it back, refund/exchange etc, but he said i may wish to try cleaning the contacts. btw, this is applicable for every button, not just the common ones.
so i have a few questions.
is the remote just wore out.
does anyone know what may be causing this and what the fix is.
if i am to take the remote apart, could someone point me in the direction of taking the remote apart.
should i bother with trying to fix it or just send it back and ask for my money/replacement.

Depends on what you paid for it and how much it will cost you to send it back. It may actually be cheaper to buy another one (I tend to buy them in sets of 3 or 5, that way if one is bad, no big deal)

You can use a small screwdriver to pry it apart, I usually start in the middle.

You can try cleaning the contacts (use contact cleaner or a dry soft eraser - no liquids!) to clean the PC board and the contacts on the rubber insert. You can also swap the rubber insert with the one from your remote (assuming same model).

You may want to play with opening your original, non working remote first :)
 
did some searching on the net and found this for repairing remotes. very informative. however, anyone know how the BEV remotes are opened up. are there any screws.

I had the SAT key on 5900 remote not work ... so I opened it and fixed it by putting aluminum tape (ie. duct tape) over the key pad. I've been using it for a while with no problem - very responsive now. You may not want to do this for every key on your remote.

Another option is that you may want to try to lightly sand the pads but I don't know if that will work. It depends on the conductive rubber material used. Again, another option is to buy a keypad kit (ie. superglue and conductive material/paint) and apply it to the keypads. You can buy those at electrical stores (ie. sayal, electrosonic, etc..).

When I opened it ... I opened the remote from the thin bottom end and worked my way around until it split apart. I used a thin knife. Be careful to not damage the remote. My remote model had no screws to remove. Usually if there are screws they are in the battery compartment.

If I were you I'd probably get another remote if you have to fix all the keys. Good Luck.
 
Anything extremely abrasive (i.e. sandpaper) or any form of liquid should never be used on any kind of electronics.

A spray electronics cleaner or a dry soft plastic (white or pink) eraser can be used to gently clean oxidation/dirt off contacts.
