hi,does anyone know if it is possible/or how to test a fuel gauge on a 55 chevy without having it connected to the gastank?

(have heard that if you connect it wrong you can blow the gastank)
from what i know and see is tht the previous owner has change the gastank and the unit seems to be in it but the cables to the fuel gauge is not connected or found so i am going to draw new cables i just dont want to connect it wrong , from the wiring diagrams the cable from the send unit is brown , so is it 1 cable from the unit to 1 of the pins on the gauge and 1 cable from the other pin to the ignition switch? and finally what happens if i connect the cables wrong? can the gas tank blow?
what i wist to test is the fuel gauge in the dash ,
i just think they havent connected it after they changed the gastank.
