4x4 Problem? 2003 Ford Ranger?

2003 Ford Ranger with the 3.0L V-6, automatic 4x4.

In the mountains this weekend I had to use 4 wheel drive on some slushy/snowy road conditions, there were portions of just wet pavement and some sections of dry and snow free pavement but mostly compacted snow.

Didn't notice anything weird until yesterday morning when I start up the truck and went for a drive. There is a whirring sound coming from the center or front of the truck when accelerating, especially between 5-20mph. Once I get to a speed the sound goes away. The sound is pretty loud and almost sounds like two belts rubbing against each other (I know it's not that but that's what it sounds like). I'm worried that it might be driveline wind up.

Anybody have any suggestions for what to look into for this? I just chunked out $1200 for new tires and shocks and have no $$$ to fix something like this.

I've heard that backing up in 4 wheel drive can relieve some of the wind up tension, is that true?

Thanks!
