4700 Functionality

I just picked up a used 4700. When connecting it to my Home theater, I plan on using the optical output for DD. But will I have to connect the regular RCA connections as well to get sound on the non DD programing? Or will all sound, DD or not come through the one optical cable?

I assume the regular blue button IR remotes will work on them?
 
regular blue button remote will work with that box.
the optical out will work for all channels, in the menu options,, i dont know off the top of my head, but theres usally 2 options to pick from for the audio part,, one being if its DD, it goes out via optical, anything else wont work, then theres one that included a PCM stream of the audio + DD,, so with that option, no matter what channel your on well the sound will be digital. Honestly you dont need to worry about it, by default, the box will just send a digi audio signal via optical for all channels.
 
merve04 has covered the Audio, I just want to add a little about the remote.

The Blue Button will work just fine, it is a IR (Infra Red) Remote.

The 4700 has UHF capability as well as IR, therefore it is possible to have the receiver in another room, the basement is possible etc and have it feed your TV through the floor etc.

Just thought I would mention it. In this instance a Blue Button Remote will NOT work the UHF access.
 
Hey guys. I got it all hooked up. I have the optical cable ran to the input on my receiver and it detects the cable just nothing coming out of it. I tried the cable on my dvd player using the same input on the receiver and it worked fine.

I went into the menu and made sure the DD/PCM was checked and it was. But I cant get any sound.

Any ideas?
 
I wonder if this was why it was sold.?

Do you get a red light out of the Cable.?
 
Do you mean out of the home theater receiver end while still connected to the 4700? No I don't see anything.

Damn It! Well.....at least its a bit of an upgrade over my old 2700. And cost me next to nothing.
 
As you say, it's a touch of an Upgrade anyway.

If you have the Optic Cable in the 4700 there should be a Red Light emmiting from the other end.

Several years ago, I used to make money adding Optic Outputs to 3100's, all the circuits were on the 3100 motherboard, it was just missing the components. If you are good with a soldering iron, it might be worth replacing the LED unit, if it is this that is defective. If you are not desperate for Dolby Output, I would just live with it....
