4 week newborn - is it too early to teach sleeping without being held?

I have a newborn that is almost 4 weeks old, and we've had midwives tell us to be careful not to get the baby too used to rocking/being held/etc in order to get to sleep. I realize you do whatever you can when the baby has just been born, but at what point do you start training the baby to sleep on their own?

For instance, we're starting to notice a pattern where she won't sleep without being held or walked around first. Every time we lie her down, she starts crying. As soon as I pick her up, bam, she's quiet. Once she's fallen asleep we can usually lie her down on her own, but not always.

Is this something I should be concerned with yet, or wait it out a bit longer?
