been lurking on this board since March... I could not stand the ever increasing sharp sciatic pain which has been getting worse since that time...

so, 2 months ago we had an MRI done, the film clearly shows a enormous herniation/bulge inbetween L4-L5, We tried an EPIDURAL injection 1 month ago and did not help anything at all (actually felt worse).

So, my Neurosurgeon & I agreed to do an open discectomy. We had the surgery 4 days ago. I am in decent shape and fit/healthy and a good candidate for surgery.

Like many I read on this board, I would hear stories of people reporting immediate release & relief. I too hoped for such results but:

the surgery went as well as expected and I returned home from the hospital the following morning. However within hours after the surgery, I could still feel trace sciatic pains in my glute and the top of my foot.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, two days ago I call my neuro-doc and tell im I still have sciatic pain and he suggests that it is normal because of the bruising, swelling arounf the incision area and that I should callm down and not freak out. It's been 4 days post-op, am I being hyper sensitive or am I going to be another one of those dark spiralling cases of pain meRAB, pain management doctors & depression???

Yes, it has been only 4 days but I can still feel the pain and am probably just scared.

Has anyone else had this situation?

Help:angel:

Hi there! it has been two years since I had my discectomy, your doctor is right settle down!!!!!! I speak from experience, I was alot like you I expected little mini miracles to happen right away, did not even occur to me that all of that surgery would agitate my nerves etc and they needed to heal and repair. Fretting and worrying will only keep the nerves high strung. I will not bore you with all of my details but believe you me it will take time and patience. The best info I got on this board was the statement I just made, they were right. Find some soothing music to listen to, stay out of your head and stop scaring yourself. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Blessings! Wildflowers

The nerve is inflamed. It takes awhile especially if the nerve was entrapped for a long time. I had twinges up to a year afterwarRAB. You will eventually get relief.
