3Ds Max 8 question?

I am making a tree and there are over 300,000 polygons per branch (made the trunk and branch seperate). I don't know thats alot of polys but I wanted to go all out, but now im starting to regret it.

Max is getting really laggy with all of this and I need a helpful trick to either hide seperate polygons to save memory. Please help.
