3d headaches

I was saving myself for my first 3d movie until Avatar came out!
Loved the film, loved the 3d aspect, in the morning though i had the worst bloody headache in a while.
Anyone else suffer or is it just me?!

While i am at it... sick of Mark Kermode and others saying it is just a gimmick - can't there be the two types? sc-fi and CGI cartoon movies seem to work great in 3d (from what i saw of the trailers that is) while others may not be suited - I dont see a problem, can't see why both 3d and 2d sit comfortably together. The only downside is the extra cost (having to pay for the glasses) plus, how many of the glasses get recycled? saw a pair in the cinema toilet! bit a a green issue there!? surely, if we knew we had money off next visit we would save our glasses?

Yeah, I could feel my right eye straining to keep focus while watching it yesterday.

Didn't have a headache but it is not something I want to keep happenign everytime I go to the cinema.

Depending how cynical you are, you could argue the only reason for the glut of recent 3D fims - and there's many more to come in 2010 - is just to raise more revenue for the studios. Adding a few quid for tickets for 3D films adRAB a few million more to the box office of 3D films. And not only do you pay more to see the 3D, there's a chance you'll get a headache too.

Avatar is supposed to be amazing in 3D so who knows, perhaps 3D does have its merits but I think the future for 3D films is non-glasses 3D. Wearing 3D glasses tricks your brain into thinking you're seeing real 3D when you're not, you're looking at a flat screen and some people will get severe eyestrain which leaRAB to severe headaches! 3D, ain't it great? :D :p

I look forward to the future then (no 3D glasses) until then, i will still venture to a 3d screening to see that 'special' (Star Wars Ep4,5,6? I live in hope) 3d film and take some codine after it just in case!
You missed out another reason for 3d films being pushed and this is piracy. At the moment it is impossible to film it with a camcorder or even a dvd rip for home viewing to get that 3d effect. Can't blame them for that but just give us the option of recycling our own glasses to bring cost down to same as 2d film.

Yeh, got a nice headache altho it did settle down about an hour and a half into the movie. I have to say that whilst everything that was in focus did work very well in 3d for me, everything in the background, out of focus seemed to split apart or have a ghost image. Surely that's not visual progress.

Just been back too see Avatar at the IMAX with my brother. First time we went to IMAX ever, but we've seen many 3-D films. This is the first time ever though, that I've had a headache from. My brother was actually sick just after too. Won't be going to IMAX again. :(

If not joking, how much will they cost! I'm not paying because I can't see properly without glasses on. They should make the glasses they have now in a way that can go over glasses easily, a section cut out of the plastic so it can slide/clip onto the person's glasses.

James Cameron said that this new 3D form should not cause headaches... and I'm worried now because the normal 3D films give me headaches, and now people who didn't get headaches with the normal 3D are getting headaches with Avatar...

If I pay for a ticket to see it and have to come out after say 20 minutes because I can't handle the 3D anymore, can you get a refund? I don't want to pay

Well i'm in the camp that does think this latest 3D craze is gimmicky as hell.

The problem I have with it is it really doesn't translate well to the home viewing market, i'm sure with the cinema type atmosphere 3D can be great but however good it is I'm never going to want to be sat at home with 3D glasses on.

Which leaves you with a bunch of films that i'm sure are great at the cinema but look totally bloody stupid and unnatural while watching at home because of the elements that are supposed to be 3D.

I watched the film, and have been watching Real 3d movies for a while now (at no extra cost due to my cineworld card) and have had no headaches, neither did anyone else I went with.

Cineworld are now recycling glasses, so you can get money off next time if you bring the same set you brought.

Unfortunately they are now adding a surcharge to cineworld card holders :(

It's been 2 days since I say Avatar, and my eyes still ache. I also head a headache afterward. I guess the technology isn't at a point that it's comfortable for everyone, yet. I look forward to seeing the film in 2D soon, as the discomfort of 3D really spoiled the experience.

While watching Avatar my eyes were aching and i had to keep removing the glasses to give my eyes a rest. But the pain stopped a few hours later that day.

Well I saw Avatar last night and I'm fine, didn't take my glasses off once throughout the film either. I've got 20/20 vision so perhaps that's an element that helps me, I dunno.

I don't see 3D as a complete gimmick, as Avatar prooved, it can be used extremely tastefully. Yeah there's the whole anaglyphic 3D used in the 80's that had rakes being shoved in your face so the audience would try and reach out... that's gimmicky... but subtle uses to aid the illusion of depth, in my opinion, IS the future of cinema.

It's interesting to read about the headaches that people are experiencing. I wonder if the different 3D systems and different levels of parallax seperation are contributing to this phenomenon? The separation must be huge on an IMAX screen for example. Also, don't different cinemas use different systems like Xpand 3D and others Dolby 3D too?
I watched Avatar at my local Cineworld in RealD and I had absolutely no eyestrain or headache issues at all. I also watch 3D films at home using shutter glasses with no issues at all.
On the other hand, if I watch an anaglyph movie on DVD all the way through I do have problems and have even ended up with blood shot eyes in the past.
So do different systems effect different people and is the seperation between left and right eyes different from screen to screen? I can't see why people should get headaches when 3D is displayed properly unless they have underlying medical issues. After all, we all receive a seperate image to our eyes that the brain has to interpretate every day of our lives.

I wish the lenses in the glasses were bigger. I keep seeing over the top or out of either side.

Plus, bigger glasses would save me having to keep my head in a certain position to keep the screen in full view.

'Up' looks fine in 2D on Blu Ray, and if you've got Xbox Live it's worth checking out the 4 minute 'Avatar' clip in 1080p HD on the Zune Marketplace to see what the Blu Ray will look like. It may not be 3D, but it still looks bloody fantastic, and definitely not unnatural.
