3D Avatar vs. Avatar IMAX 3D ?

Have you ever been to the IMAX? It's huge. The cost of the equipment and the film rolls they use are why it's more expensive. The experience is different, but in all honesty I'd prefer a non-IMAX screening. This is because the IMAX is so big you can't really focus on the screen as a whole and you're constantly moving your eyes around... more than on a regular screen anyway.

I went to watch Monsters vs. Aliens in IMAX 3D and I agree with you there. Even sat right at the back its like having your face 2 inches away from a TV set. Its tooooo big lol

An important difference between the two versions is that the IMAX 3D one is 16:9, while the multiplex version is cropped to 2.35:1. So you get to see more in the IMAX version.

As for screen sizes, I haven't seen IMAX 3D but I find the 3D effect is much better when sitting near the back of the cinema. It's harder to focus when sitting in the front few rows.

Went to an IMAX 3D screening of Avatar a few days ago and ended up sitting in the third row because we booked late. It was an amazing experience but definitely would advise sitting further back, the screen is simply too big to take it all in when you're sitting that close. Can't complain though as we went on an Orange Wednesday and with a student ticket cost me less than
