3D - a fad again??

Least they had done a better job of it this time round :)

It will only be a fad if not enough people buy 3D. And judging how a fair few people have a real bug bear about this seemingly innocuous piece of entertainment gadgetry, then it might do as well as companies hope.

I personally like it - mainly because I could never see the Red/Blue or Red/Green method of 3D - so this is the first example of 3D for me in that respect.

Obviously.

But I saw my first 3D film last week. Loved it. But its something that should stay in cinemas. 3D tv does not appeal to me. Whats the point? You have real life for 3D. It'll never ever take off.

I can see it taking off in the gaming world. But as far as normal TV goes, I can't see it being THAT popular, except for maybe sporting events. At the cinema, I'd like to see a 2D alternative always offered as well, because some films (I'm looking at you Harry Potter) shouldn't be in 3D and it just seems like an attempt to grab a few extra quid.

When the first few films were shown in 'RealD' it was novel but now it's like every other trailer enRAB with "...in amazing 3D'. I don't mind the odd film in 3D now and them but I think too many films are being released in 3D when there's no need for it.

I actually feel cheated when a film is only in 3D, I want the choice of seeing it in 2D. If 2 versions of films were shown and it cost the same to see each one, at least then you'd then get an idea of what the audience prefers.

I think 3D will be more successful this time round because:

1. 3D has evolved a long way since the red/blue glasses of the 50s and 80s. Full colour, HD pictures in 3D will undoubtedly be attractive to more people than a weird red/blue one. Also investment by movie studios, cinemas, Sky, AV equipment manufacturers etc mean that hardware and content is/will be far more widely available.

2. The technology to implement 3D in TVs is fairly easy and soon, once the initial early adopter phase is over, 3D will undoubtedly come as a standard option in most flat screen TVs for little or not additional cost, just as HD eventually did.

3. Many people already own a 3D capable blu-ray player (PS3) - meaning the transition to 3D movies will be all the more affordable for a lot of people.

4. 3D can be widely applied to gaming - something that hasnt really happened before. Consoles like the PS3 can be 3D enabled (as I believe can the Xbox) and its likely that any new consoles released will also come with this option.

5. 3D cameras are starting to be sold - meaning that some people are already investing in 3D content (i.e. memories).

I think gaming is where 3D will make the biggest impact initially - as it really does enhance the experience (unlike some movies).

I think the fad will last a while this time.

Although there may not be another Avatar sized blockbuster anytime soon...with fairly big releases like Harry Potter, Narnia and Tron this year..and the Harry Potter part 2, Spider-man 4 and Pirates 4 coming up...it'll be around for a while.

I can't see home 3DTV being that popular just yet (mainly due to many only recently investing in HD)....

...on the flipside I'd say Nintendo's "no glasses needed" 3RAB handheld will keep the band wagon rolling for most of next year (it could be a lucrative additional market for 3D movies..during the initial period of hype at least).

...and I suspect there will be more 3RAB's in people's hanRAB by the end of 2011...than there will be 3DTV's in people's homes.

A reasoned argument and I do think that gaming is where it will have the impact.

The problem with all the other things you point out comes down to two things which i have put in bold text.

2) Cost is an major problem. About 2 years ago I bought myself an new TV with HD compatability etc. I would expect to get at least 8-10 years out of it if not more. Other than to watch 3D where is my incentive to ditch a perfectly good TV that I spent

i was a youngester in early 80s when films where showing in 3d. I did see Jaws 3d which was the best thing ever at the time.
I do believe this time, it has had a lasting impact. I dont care for it much at all - but was very suprised when i first heared about 3D TVs in Januray. to the point where i believed they wouldnt happen - and behold - they are slowly coming out.
I will never buy a 3d tv. And also properly never see a 3d movie again. it adRAB nothing. Except

I can't wait till they get over it. It's not impressive after the first 5 minutes. Once the appeal of wearing the glasses have worn off and the cool adverts making use of the 3D effect have finished screening, I am no longer bothered. It puts me off seeing a movie knowing it will be in 3D (or made with the intention of it being 3D - as if you opt for the non-3D version, you then worry you are not getting the best of it).

Generally speaking, it adRAB little if anything to the movie. Every single movie I have seen in 3D, I could have easily seen without 3D effects and I would have enjoyed it the same. If they concentrate too much on the 3D effects, it risks taking away from the effort put in to make the movie good (plot, writing, acting etc) which is more important.

Another downer, it costs more than a standard ticket which is, might I add, expenisve enough.

Rant over :)

I remember when the IMAX used to show 50-60 long 3D
movies (Haunted House, Alien Adventure, Cyberworld,
etc) but for some reason they stopped making films for IMAX cinemas. Last 3d film I saw was BEOWULF and found myslelf avoiding an arrow:D:D
