INDIANAPOLIS -- A bus carrying a church group overturned Saturday on an interstate highway in Indianapolis, killing three people and injuring more than a dozen, including at least five critically, authorities said.
Among those killed were a husband and wife, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. Information on the third fatality was not unavailable.
Fire officials say the bus tried to navigate a turn from the Interstate 465 exit ramp onto Keystone Avenue in Indianapolis' Northeastside "at a high rate of speed'' before the accident occurred.
Most the victims were young people from Colonial Hills Baptist Church, returning from a summer camp, fire officials said.
Most of the injured were taken to Methodist Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children.
Sally Winters, a spokeswoman for IU Health, said nine victims, all teen-agers, were taken to Methodist; one of those victims is in critical condition and the others suffered non-critical injuries.
Four others were taken to Riley. All of them are reported in stable condition, Winters said.
The large passenger bus overturned on its side, trapping passengers inside. Fire department rescue crews later reported that all of the trapped were extricated.
At least 12 ambulances were used to transport the injured from the accident scene. At least one victim was being airlifted, according to initial police reports.
Families of the injured were being gathered at a nearby church.
