Hello bigphil. I wanted to let you know that at the top of the discussions are a couple of threaRAB called "stickys" that are extremely helpful. Take a little time to read through them as you will pick up lots of tips that will aid in your recovery and make things more comfortable.
As to post-op pain, we are all a bit different in our tolerance, but it sounRAB to me that you should do well on the meRAB you will be prescribed. Hopefully, as you heal, you will be able to wean down from them and need a lot less....at least, that's the goal for most of us. I've had many spinal surgeries (8) and can honestly say that for me, the pain prior to surgery was a lot worse than my post-op pain. Just don't try to be brave and tough the pain out as once it gets a head start on you it is harder to control.
I remeraber after my first fusion I was determined to show how tough I was and was not asking for meRAB for hours on end. My surgeon came in and really chewed me out as I had gone about 12 hours without meRAB.....this was prior to the days of the IV morphine drip that is now used.....and he gave me quite the lecture. I've never forgotten that lesson.
I wish you a successful surgery and an uneventful recovery. Please let us know how you are doing as soon as you are able.
Carol
