2network connections Mozilla won't access net?

I have two network connections on my PC (MS Xp Pro)
(Connection 1)is connected to shaw cables Motorola SURFboard via USB
(Connection 2)is connected to a Linksys wireless router via cat5 cable. This router is my home network. I don't have a problem with my home network.
The problem I have is that when I am connected to both networks Mozilla Firefox and Explorer try to access the internet through the second connection.
I get two IP addresses from shaw one is just for my PC through the usb port on the cable modem. The second IP address runs through the ethernet port on the cable modem to the Linksys wireless router to give my home network internet access.
I have used the router settings to block my PC from being able to access the internet through that connection in an attempt to steer Mozilla Firefox and Explorer to use connection 1 (USB) but it did not work.
All that did is let me know when Mozilla Firefox and Explorer were trying to connect through my home network instead of the usb connection.
Now you might be wondering why I bothered setting it up this way and the answer is simple, the usb connection is faster and I do all our downloading with my PC and then use the home network to access the files on other devices such as my wifes PC, laptop, Xbox 360's, PS3, Etc.. And I do not want the home network to access the internet through my PC eating up my bandwidth 12 Mbps.
The home network maxes out at about 6 Mbps. And no the home network does not change, it makes no difference if I'm downloading or not still only 6 Mbps.
If any one could please help I would really appreciate it. (disabling and enabling the connections all the time is getting really old)
