23 male, waking up with chest tightness

I am 23, 170lbs, 6ft., active, smoker.

In the morning I'll wake up and when I try to inhale there is a sharp pain in the left side of my chest. The pain is severe enough that I have to take short shallow breaths until it passes, within a minute. The same tightness/pain has happened before when I'm sitting in a particular position, but it is most frequent in the mornings. It feels as though it has become more frequent, almost daily.

I broke my ribs on that side over a three years ago, but the doctor said that it wasn't severe.

I am now uninsured, losing my coverage after graduating from college.. so any info would be great. Thanks a lot everyone.

I may very well be wrong, but it does sound like your ribs, because of the pain when inhaling, and sitting in certain positions, and your breaking them in the past. I would suggest going to a free clinic, most large cities have them. If you do not have one, because of the new changes in medical coverage, you are most likely eligible for health insurance. I heard everybody will be able to get health care, no matter their income. You could call the department of human services and apply for medical care. Good luck, I hope you find the cause and get some pain relief.
