2010 VW Jetta or 2010 Mazda 3?

This really depends on what you want the car for. Fun, reliability, or whatever.

Reliability, I would go with the Mazda.

Fun, well it really depends on what you like to do. Both have sporty options. And both are probably fun to drive. Mazdas have really good handling.

However, the Jetta will probably be built better. Stronger material, more luxurious interior, etc.

I could go on, but I think you might see my point. You could go with either. Do you research.

If you have extra money in case anything goes wrong with the car, go with the Jetta. If money is tight, go with the Mazda.

Well my choice would be the Ford Focus, which is much like the VW Jetta and Mazda 3.
Here is the rub, the Jetta will most likely cost more to own due to depreciation and repair work. However the insurance costs are lower. If you have a bad driving record this can turn into a big advantage during ownership and offset the liabilities.
The Ford will be the best buy for a five year period, if the car lasts that long.
The Mazda 3 will have the best resale value. Which means that if it is totaled in an accident the first year or even later, there is a better chance that the insurance company will pay off the remaining loan.
The sad fact is that a 16 year old needs either a Subaru or a Volvo, that is about 15 years old for which cash is paid. That way when (not if) it is totaled they will be more likely to walk away from the wreck, and just let the car go with out having to place a claim in for damages.
