2009 Ford Escape trailer hitch?

Ok, so I just recently bought a used 09 Ford Escape Limited V6 4x4 that did not have the towing package. I am looking to install a trailer hitch however I have heard doing this may void the warranty. Is this accurate?? What should I look out for when shopping for a hitch, should I buy from ford or just find after market parts somewhere else??? Any info would greatly be appreciated
