2007 Honda VTX 1300R to 2011 Road King...learning curve? Metric riders?

1. The Jiffy stand will scare you until your used to it.
2. You won't push it up your driveway as easy as your VTX
3. No engine vibration (except when its idling)
4. You will have a bigger smile
 
Ive got an 1800C VTX, Love it and will keep it when I get the RG this coming spring...some differences as others have stated....but I think you will be very happy with the switch, keeping or trading the X?
 
I couldn't disagree more. I have ridden Metric bikes for 33 years. My Heritage is my first Harley and I wouldn't go back! I am one of those guys that always bashed Harley for the low quality machines they were when AMF was building them. Joked about oil leaks and other crap, BUT my Heritage Classic is smoother than the Honda Shadow Sabre I traded for it. I have had NO problems with this bike.

Chrome accessories are cheaper than they are for the Metrics, and there are thousands of ways to make your Harley your own. Mine has never left me stranded or even with a single problem and I have 12,700 miles on her so far without a hitch.

Oh, and you will LOVE the gas mileage. My 01 Road Star had a 1602cc motor and I was lucky to get 35 mpg. My Heritage has a 96 inch (1600cc) engine, runs better, smoother, faster, and I get 48 mpg!

Make the switch! You won't ever look back!
 
I went from a VTX1300 to a Fatboy to a Road King. the biggest thing was the turn signal location and operation. I appreciate HD's self-canceling. and like's been said, no more apologies or excuses for it NOT being a Harley.

just my opinion - if you can ride a motorcycle, you can ride any motorcycle. ask youself, what learning curve do you go through switching from a passenger car to a truck? do you worry about if you're gonna be able to handle the changes? if so, you might want to reconsider riding a motorcycle.
 
Thanks for the ideas and tips guys......not much bad I can say about the VTX, my first cruiser. As far as noise goes, the VTX is a pretty noisy beast as well.....in fact just about any V-Twin with a windshield sounds pretty funky

VTX has to go...only room for one scoot in the garage. I'll probably hang on to it until the spring when pricing will be a bit better. I'm probably going to get the RK through the military buyers program as the pricing is very good. Unless a local dealer can come close I'll have to wait until December to take delivery of it.

I'm counting on the biger smile part

learning curve was probably not the right bit of terminology....I guess I was looking for what other metric riders who made the jump to HD have noticed between their metric bikes and the HD, what stood out etc....


So far some good info guys!

I agree with everything said and will add that since you have decided not to go the batwing route, the general feel of riding the RK may allow you to get comfortable immediately. The batwing takes a few rides to get used to the weight of the fairing and the changes in vision from it. That jiffy (kick) stand will scare you at first in that it lets the bike to move one notch forward before catching. I too have bruised my shin a few times forgetting that the bike is not going to roll forward and drop.
