2007 Ford Explorer Coolant loss?

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer V8. Yesterday I parked at a store and when I came out I noticed a small amount of steam coming from the passenger side of the hood. I started the car and it ran fine, temperature gauge was normal. Today, I took it out and put some gas in it. When I was driving back home, the engine sounded louder (like a fan was on or something?) I noticed the temperature gauge was running very hot. I pulled over on the side of the road (with the car still running) and the gauge quickly lowered back to normal. I slowly drove back home, and right when I was pulling in the garage, the temperature gauge was very hot, all the way to the H. I had a friend come over who has a knowledge of cars, and he said I was out of coolant. Today (using a different car) I am going to go buy some coolant and put it in the radiator and reservoir. There are no signs of any leaks. The car only has 35,000 miles on it. Is this unusual for a car not that old? What do I do? I am supposed to drive from California to Texas in a month and am worried.

Sorry for all the information. Thanks for any answers/suggestions.
