2007/2008 Center Ice - Ottawa Region

Hello,

My name is Owen and I live in Ottawa. As of this time I'm in the process of trying to find out whether or not I'll be able to tune into every Leaf game if I buy a reciever and sign-up for NHL Center Ice 2007/2008. As I sadly discovered last season when I moved up here, most Leaf games are not shown in the Ottawa region due to the NHL's blackout policies respecting the markets of individual teams like the Sens. However, with the CI package, you are supposedly able to see all games outside of your "home" teams market - will this include ALL Leaf games?

Note: What if I buy a Toronto based reciever/smart card and use it in the Ottawa region? Will it allow me to watch Leaf games here?

All help will be greatly appreciated!

It is all based on the billing address.

Stating you are a Leaf fan and living in Ottawa is asking for a world of hurt :-)
 
So if my billing address is in the leaf region, I'll be getting all the Leaf broadcasts? This holds true even if the service is registered to an Ottawa address?

Also, do you happen to know the answer to my question regarding NHL Center ICE?

Unfortunately, I am not well versed in how the blackouts work for CI.

It is my understanding though that when you sign up for CI you get all the additional games regardless of where you are. It may work out better to have a billing address in Ottawa as the blackouts I believe are against games that are local as it competes against ticket sales. Therefore, although the Sens are much more enjoyable to watch :) you wouldn't be blacked out for Leaf games since they are out of market.

I'm sure someone else can validate or provide more info as I really have no clue as to how it works.

For non-CI, the Toronto games appear much more often. If you have Sports 1 (or whichever has TSN and SC) then between those channels and CBC you should get most Leaf games. I know I was able to watch everything other than the Sens PPV and about 6 games that were only on CI last season.

Not sure if nhl.com has the list up for next season yet but you can check the listings for last season (assuming they are still there) as they show what channels have the rights to broadcast. They may also have more CI info as it is their limitation, not EV;s.
 
Blackouts are determied by the SERVICE ADRESS, not the BILLING ADRESS...

SERVICE ADRESS is often not changed when client moves... Some people were told that we should never change it, which is wrong! If the service adress is not updated it is possible that you are receving your bills and every documentation we send out, since we are using the BILLING ADRESS for sending documentation

Games you will see on NHL Center Ice are the ones out of your market, so if your SERVICE ADRESS is in the Leafs area you WILL NEVER SEE THEM ON CI!!! You will need to take Leafs channel for 2.50$ a month (which will akls give you Leafs HD)
 
YOU WILL GET EVERY LEAF GAME ON CENTER ICE IF YOU LIVE IN OTTAWA



Ottawa does 5 PPV games per season. If one of the the PPV games is against the leafs you won't get it on Center Ice and will have to order the PPV.


I live in BC and i GET ALL 17 CANUCK PPV GAMES FOR FREE BECAUSE MY BILLING ADDRESS IS FROM NOVA SCOTIA. I made up a fake address, postal code and phone number via CanadaPost.ca. Then I can go online(bellexpressvu.com) and change my bill so that it is sent to my email instead of the fake address. Been doing this since 2002 when PPV was introduced to BC WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.
 
Ringmaster it is your SERVICE ADRESS, not your BILLING ADRESS which changes your viewing zone

It is your SERVICE ADRESS that must have been changed to the Nova Scotia one and your BILLING ADRESS ids the one where you actually live
 
Yeah, that makes sense. I guess my point was that it doesn't matter where the unit was purchased. Thanks for correcting me. At least I was on track about in-market and out-of-market :)
 
Your cheapest solution would be to set up a TO billing/service address. Then get the bills e-mailed to you. This would get you nearly all Leaf games (assuming you have the sports pack(s)), and any that aren't included in the regular TSN/CBC/Sportsnet schedules should be available on Leafs TV.

The BEST option, obviously, is to cheer for a better team. This would allow you to register using your real address. And you'd be able to stay awake for the entire game.:D
 
No need to bother with the e-bills, the only thing you need to worry about is THE SERVICE ADRESS. SERVICE ADRESS detremines your viewing area and it could be different thn THE BILLING ADRESS. BILLING ADRESS are only determines where your bills are being sent
 
Thanks for all the follow-ups people. One more question, however: can Bell ExpressVu tell where your service address is? I.e. via a satalite signal can they determine where they are transmitting the signal to? So if I told them that my service address was in the Leafs region, but I was actually in the Sen's region, could they tell?

Word of advice to all Bell Sympatico users - you know how they state there a limitations on bandwidth for the lower grades of internet packages? Not true; they don't even have the capability of calculating the amount of bandwidth coming from a particular service, let alone bill for it - I know because I work for them. So in other words, sign-up for the cheapest version with limitations on bandwidth and download away :)

No, there are no GPS chips built into the receiver. It is a receiver only and therefore does not transmit anything back up to the satellite. The same sats are used to broadcast service all across the country and they aren't using spot-beams to isolate what goes where at this time.....at least not within Canada. (reception in the U.S., particularly southern states, has degraded over the years)

However, they can tell if you hook up the phone line (this is the only outgoing form of communication), which you are supposed to do. If you do not, then once in a while you may get a telephone call from EV asking for some information.....but that is another story that is covered in detail elsewhere.

But, as mentioned above, I beleive you want to have your service address in Ottawa anyway as that will reduce the blackouts for Toronto games.

If other BEV subscribers in the Ottawa area experienced BO'd Leaf games then I am surprised. I actually recall being quite surprised that while visiting my mother in the Sen's market, that regional Leaf games were not BO'd on BEV. I would have thought the Sens would have insisted on BEV BO these non-Sen's games. Incidentally, the BEV service at my mother's has always been there since new installation - it was not moved from another address.

opiewann, I am thinking that this past year, that you were trying to watch Leafs games in Ottawa via analog cable or OTA. In this case you would not get the additional TSN feed (via digital cable or sat.). I can't recall what level of Leaf games were on SNET, but with out digital service in the Ottawa area you likely would not have seen them as they would have been on SNET Ontario, not SNET East, which is what Ottawa gets, at least on BEV.

Therefore, if you only want to watch leafs games, I suggest you get an Ottawa billing address with a Toronto service address. The only problem will be if your unit needs to dial in. This will not get you games on LeafsTV which you will have to purchase separately.
If you want additional hockey as well, get the Ottawa service address as this will let you see the Sens local games. However note that LeafsTV is not available outside of their territorial area so you wouldn't see those games. If for some reason that doesn't work out (Leafs are BO'd), call BEV and tell them the receiver is going to a Toronto service address, but you still want the bills sent to your Ottawa address.

Please note that all games shown on LeafsTV are in HD if you have that level of service. Also note that under the new agreement with HNIC, more Leaf games will be carried by TSN and LeafsTV. This opens up more CBC games for the other Cdn teams.
