I was driving in moderate rain last night and drove across a wet intersection. I was careful to drive slowly as not to splash water into engine. However, half way across the engine surged giving me a boost of speed and then started to sputter and lose power. I pulled over and took my foot off the gas and it died. Subsequent attempts to start have the engine turn over well, start up, run for about a half second and shut off.
I have now let it sit for over 15 hours and it will start, sputter, rev once or twice and die. If I rapidly pump the gas pedal it will continue to run until I stop doing so.
Any ideas on what is wrong?
I was thinking that with the air filter as well but thought that after sitting so long and having turned it over so many times it would have been dried. I know with my old Ford minivan the air filter was in the bottom of the engine compartment for some stupid reason.
Thank you all for your answers. Turns out the hose had disconnected from the air filter unit. It was aligned so closely that it was hard to tell that it was off. Van is purring again
