2006 Ford Explorer - Reverse Sensor (What is it?)?

I'm thinking about getting a 2006 Ford Explorer and I noticed it has a "reverse sensor" on it. Does anyone know how exactly it works in this model? My friend just bought a new pickup and it basically looks like a stud finder that he can see in his rear view mirror that goes from green to red when he is within 6 inches of an object. How does it work in the 2006 Explorer? Thanks for any help.
 
As you back up, the sensor will beep, the closer you come to an object while in resverse, the faster the sensor will beep. It is a warning mechanizm to let you know, when you are comming close to somehting as you back up.
