2005 pontiac bonneville SE 3.8L V6?

It seems i get sometimes depending on how you drive it a hard shift between 1st and 2nd gear on the automatic transmission. it only has 40,000 miles on it but it you hit the pedal atleast decently and not try to baby it it seems like its a long shift for the vehicle to make? any ideas i know its equipped with a smart transmission occording to the Cd that was in the glove box about the whole entire car and the owners manual
