ok this is going to be my first car. and i don't know which one to get. even though id rather have the v8, i really would like the most reliable engine. i dont really need excellent acceleration as it is only my first car. please give me advice!
no the explorers have never had anything over a 5.0L and that was in the old body designs before the 2002-2005.
Only options are the 4.0L V6 or 4.6L V8

im pretty sure in 05 the eddie bauer had the 5.4 v8 as the engine option a 4.0 v6 was standard on xl or the base model but the eddie bauer is the premium model and had only the 5.4 so if you want the eddie a v8 is your only choice i have a 04 f1250 with 5.4 and have had no problems with it and also a 2002 xlt explorer with the 4.0 v6 that has given us no trouble

the V8 motor for the explorer is the 4.6L, the 5.4 wouldn't fit to save it's life.

both the 4.6L and 4.0L motors are very reliable and are known to last over 300,000 with little to no trouble.

I have the 4.0L overhead valve motor, it runs like a champ, lotsa power and I get pretty good gas mileage as well. Havne't had any problem with it or the transmision. However I do perform regular and preventative maintenance because I don't like to get stuck anywhere.

the new 4.0L the OHC (overhead cam) has more power in it, but the only problem with this motor is if a camshaft sensor goes bad, literally the entire motor has to come out to change the sensor. And, there are 4 of them. I've only seen them go out 1 time, the guy who did the work said he should have pulled the motor but opted not to.
that motor had 145,000 miles on it though.
the sensors were cheap, the labor was not.
But use Motorcraft plugs only and quality oil filters (like Wix, Purolator, Motorcraft) and quality oil.. it'll run forever.
