2005 Ford 6.0L Turbo Diesel - What's the real story?

We are considering purchasing a 2005 Ford F550 truck that is equipped with a 6.0L turbo diesel engine. A mechanic told me that these engines are mechanically sound but the electronics create service problems. A friend of mine told me that a business acquaintance of his told him that he had considerable down time with Ford trucks and the 6.0L diesel.

I am trying to avoid purchasing a problem vehicle and would like input, good or bad, from anyone who has experience with this engine.

We will use the truck as a service truck. It will be loaded with tools so it will be heavy. We will also want to occasionally tow a trailer that weighs about 10,000 lbs when loaded.

We have similar vehicles equipped with the 460 gasoline engine. They don't have the low end torque we would like. Gas mileage is between 6 and 7 MPG.

I drove the diesel truck and the low end torque is much better than the gasoline engine. Of course, it wasn't loaded with all of our tools which I expect will add about 2000 lbs. I've been told that we will get between 8 and 10 MPG fuel mileage with the diesel engine.

Any input will be appreciated.

The mechanic was probably speaking of the electonic direct injection. Although they're more efficient, they are not nearly as reliable as the old mechanical driven pump that the old diesels used to use. You could thank the new emissions laws for that, lol. Anyways I would still go for the diesel because they are alot more usefull when towing heavy loads and they last longer. good luck!!
