2004 toyota echo standard gears grind in reverse.?

I bought a 2004 toyota echo standard. I notice especially when its cold when i go to put in reverse to back it out of the driveway, It grinds horrible. Its not so bad when its warmed up. Still it shouldnt be grinding at all. The other gears are okay but are a bit rough around the edges. But the reverse sounds real bad.
