2004 Dodge Neon hesitates on take off...any ideas on what's wrong?

Dodge Neon 2004 - It's one owner car...has had regular maintenance.. One day, while running some errands, I noticed that at every stop light/sign it would hesitate on changing gears when I would take off. From first to second in particular, but also noticed later that if I accelerated from 40 to 50 mph on the freeway, it would do it then, too. I was getting onto the freeway when this happened. Aside from that, everything is running and checked out. It IS burning motor oil...suggestions? ideas? Besides "hey lady, take it to the mechanic"...*LOL*
