I changed my battery on my RX8 last week. Before changing the car would not start. Had the old battery checked - it was dead. Anyway since changing the battery my oil light will not go off. The car is also leaking a lot of what appears to be oil. When driving I am leaving a trial of marks of oil (could be petrol but I dont think so). I think my car is in major trouble. When driving it the engine sounds normal. Any ideas on what has happened to my car?
whatever it is that is coming out of the car it appears to come from the exhaust. I am getting it towed first thing Mon morn to Mazda!
I put synthetic oil into my car for the first time last week!.
I am beginning to think it may be petrol that is leaving marks on my drive. I also left marks all the way up my street when I took it out. I am not going to start the car again until someone looks at it to identify the problem. I am not talking a few drops, it is a lot that is leaking.

I agree with the above, as you will know the RX8 uses a huge amount of oil, much more then most cars and so leaving this could cause massive problems.

If you engine seizes solid it's going to cost a fortune, keep a constant eye on that Oil level until it's fixed.

Apparently using Synthetic oil can cause issues you are referring to. I'd join or check with a local RX-8 club or forum who may know much more about the rotary than what some of us shade tree guys just read about.

Regardless, I'd get it to someone who specializes in Rotary engines, or go back to the dealer to see if they spot anything.

If I remember correctly, Mazda recalled a lot of RX-8 due to oil leaks. I will research it and post it at the bottom when I find it.

EDIT Agree with the guy above since you posted it is coming from the exuast. If it is dark black and leaving an oil looking mark on the ground it could be just running really rich. Odds are there is an O2 sensor gone bad and the car is trying to compensate by adding a lot of fuel, leaving black droplets of carbon/fuel on the ground.

totally degrease the engine and jet wash/clean it...jack it up...start it and see where its coming from....your oil pressure switch may be faulty, cos if its not and your running it with that light on,it WILL Cause damage...
EDIT....its not very likely that oil is coming out the exhaust...have you checked your coolant levels?...is it loosing any?..possable head gasket failer.
