2003 honda 400ex quad please help?

I have a 2003 honda 400ex 4stroke ,recently been noticing that its taking a long time for the quad to start, and when i do get it to start it does a little backfiring then only stays on for like 2 minutes then dies. it dosent smoke, im thinking maybe the carburator needs cleaning. what could it be. the motor is stock ,with only the following upgrades;k &n filter,white bros exhaust slip on and jet kit.
 
I'll agree with your thinking the carb may need cleaning, especially after you said it backfires a little. Give it a thorough cleaning paying extra attention to choke and/or enrichening circuits, and pilot circuits. If you don't have experience find someone who does to help you.
