My 2003 dodge ram 1500 5.7l hemi Quad Cab with an AUTOMATIC transmission has a problem. Sometimes when i get in the truck and turn it on it wont let me switch gears. The brake goes down normally but the stick to change gears from P wont move. Ill have to turn the truck on and off until it will let me. What could be making it do this?

Some other problems that the truck is having:

While driving, the truck will stall. Usually while slowing down from a semi fast speed. When it stalls the only way to realize it is to notice the deceleration. The radio,a/c, and lights stay on. Also at times, the truck will turn on just fine and the brake will go down, but the stick to change gears wont move. It will take me turning the truck on and off several times until it will let me move the gear shifter. The idle sometimes has a problem. When the truck is in park the truck will sometimes rev itself (usually around 500-1100) at times the truck will go below 500, begin to shake, and die( or rev hard and struggle to stay alive). The truck also sometimes revs itself while in drive. For example, you can be driving and come to a stop sign and the truck will just keep reving itself. Not only at stop signs either sometimes while going 20 or another slow speed the truck will constantly "jump".

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!
I just took got it out of the shop 3 days ago. They did a tune up so probably around 100 miles since the last tune up...
truck has 86k miles total though

sound like you need to adjust the linkage and the other stuff take it to a trans shop have them check it the lights that staying on you should get it checked out it may all just be a short

The shift sticking could be the swith that the brake pedal lever pushes on and releases when you push on the brake. It sounds like you might need a TPS ( throttle positioning sensor ). You might have some miss fire issues? How many miles? How many miles since tune up, air filter, plugs and wires, that kind of stuff.

Not 100 percent sure on trans issue as we have never encountered that issue in our fleet. Engine problem is most likely the cam sensor. Located on rear of head near firewall above trans on passengers side. You have similar symptoms to our three trucks. Took me a while to figure it out but changing the cam sensor cured all three of them

B.T.W. the cam position sensor directly affects engine timing and will cause a multitude of mis fire, rough idle and shut down scenarios
