2003 Chevy Trailblazer 4x4 won't shift gears?

I have a 2003 Trailblazer with 108,000 miles on it. It also has a V6.
I was driving it today and it will not go into 4th gear. It shifts smoothly form 1st to 2nd and to 3rd but when it should change the RPM just go high and high until I take my foot off the gas peddle.

As I continued driving it, at one point when I stopped at a red light, I pressed the gas pedal, and nothing happened (RPM just went high), it moved extremely slowly. Pulled to the right, turned it off, let it cool, then turned it back on. It drove normal, however again, it would not go into 4th. The oil temperature kept fluctuating between 40 and 60, but made sure I kept it on the lower side by not pressing fully on the gas.

Any ideas what it can be? Worst case scenario and best scenario and what budget would I be looking at?

p.s. last oil change was @ 91,000 and my display still says I have 27% left. At one point, I also smelt a little smell of something burning, then it went away.
