2003 Chevy S10 Has Low Oil Pressure and Sometimes a tick?

I bought from a guy who was told he needed to fix the timing chain. He got that done. Still didn't fix the problem. He advertised it as a truck that needed a motor.

He didn't want to put another dime into the truck.

Bought for 2k and it only has 85,000 miles on it. Body in good condition. KBB is about 7k but realistically I think if it ran fine it would fetch 4.5k.

Anyways, I know nothing about cars but I do know what a rod knock sounds like. I have flipped a 99 Grand Cherokee, a 2005 Ford F250 Super Duty, and a 94 Cadillac SLS - all with rod knocks.

They are extremely noticeable. Very arrogant sounds. The Cadillac was the worst. Sounded like the engine was screaming. You could hear it probably from 100 yards away.

This S10 drives really well. Starts up every time. I'm no expert, but the engine sounds fine. Then all of a sudden it might make a ticking noise. But very quiet. Goes away. Comes and goes. Oil pressure remains very low. Almost at 0 when at 0mph....Then will gauge to about 1/4 full (more like an 1/8th) when you give it gas.

On the dash it says "Check gages"...But that comes and goes as well.

The truck drives solid. Revved it up to about 5000 RPMs and it sounded beautiful.

I can't imagine that the engine is bad.

I think some thicker oil, change the oil, the oil pump, little things - could possibly fix the truck.

I will know what my mechanic says tomorrow morning and reply with what they said when I choose best answer - but what do you think? From the sounds of it.

What could it be? It's barely noticeable and no noises when you are not hitting the gas. I drove it for 10 miles to my mechanic with the windows down and I do not think it is a rod knock at all.
